A Season of Wonder

Christmas· Devotionals· Faith

Merry Christmas! Despite the busyness of this advent season, I hope you and your family can find some time to slow down and reflect on all that Jesus did for us.

It’s a true wonder that our Savior, our “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6), left a place of perfection to dwell with sinners. He departed the beauty of heaven to live in a fallen, broken world with people who rejected and ultimately killed Him. After His crucifixion and resurrection, our Savior did not leave us here alone. We were given “another Counselor,” in addition to the Wonderful Counselor. The Holy Spirit is our Helper and Advocate (John 14:16).

Not only is Jesus our Wonderful Counselor, but our Heavenly Father works wonders and continues to do wonderful things today (Psalm 77:14; Isaiah 25:1). During times of uncertainty, we can be certain that God is still “wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom” (Isaiah 28:29). As we read and study His Word, we will “behold wondrous things” (Psalm 119:18).

Despite any of the changes or disruptions we may have experienced during 2020 or 2021, what hasn’t changed is our God. What hasn’t changed is the fact that Jesus is still “a wonder of a counselor.”[1] What a relief we don’t have to depend on our own ideas when we need wisdom or advice in these challenging times. We can rely on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

This Christmas season, let’s take a moment to marvel at the fact that we have a wonder-working Father. He gave to us the gift of His wonder of a counselor Son, but also His Spirit, to help us today and in the days to come. That is worth celebrating not just in December, but all year long.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).”
